Thank you to the many people and businesses that make the Summer Backpack Program happen each year! We appreciate the support of our community who is helping to provide nutritious meals to our students throughout the summer months. Thank you to Meijer for helping gather and box up food and items to round out our summer supply. In addition, thank you Meijer for your $500 gift! Thank you to the West Lafayette School Corp teachers for their support! Thank you to Sally Byrn for ensuring we had all of the cereal the students needed for this summer! The Summer Backpack Program remains thankful for the wonderful working relationship it has with Food Finders Food Bank as it provides the majority of the food for the program each year.
In 2013, the Summer Backpack Program was launched as an extension of the school year backpack program, which is conducted in partnership with Food Finders. The Summer Backpack program was started by parents and teachers who knew that the students in the school year program would not be receiving backpacks over the summer. When school lets out for the summer, the free school breakfast and lunch so many children depend on suddenly become unavailable, creating an area-wide crisis among food insecure households, putting pressure on families to provide 5 to 10 additional meals per child each week, and often increasing financial obligations for additional child care.
Through the West Lafayette Summer Backpack Program, eligible students receive nutritious, kid-friendly food throughout the summer. Volunteers pack an entire summer’s worth of backpacks in just a few days. Off-duty West Lafayette police officers volunteer to pick up these backpacks from the high school and deliver them the homes of students who sign up for the Summer Backpack Program.
Of the approximately 55 students served by the school year backpack program in 2014, 27 students participated in the Summer Backpack Program. The partnership between the Summer Backpack Program and the West Lafayette police officers keeps students well fed and provides a reminder to our students that they have not been forgotten over the summer.
